My soft spot for Hawaii

I haven't blogged about this but I have a soft spot for the Warriors of Hawaii. The reason is that when Florida was in the middle of the Zookian nightmare I needed a team to root for. I figured if I was going to root for a 7-5 team it might as well be a team for which that was a good mark.

Not only that, I'm a night owl and as you all know Hawaii's home games are broadcast very late on the east coast, like tonight's. I really enjoyed those high scoring (yes Mergz, poorly played, defensively) games with Timmy Chang lighting up the scoreboard and the stat sheet. In any case my rooting interest in Hawaii subsided with the coming of Urban Meyer to Gainesville. But I can't help but smile when I see coach Jones on the sidelines wearing his lei and Colt Brennan slinging the ball 50 or 60 times a game.

It's interesting to note that when the season opener became available for Michigan that Hawaii "begged" to come to Ann Arbor to play the Wolverines. Michigan turned the Warriors down and instead decided to schedule a Division 1AA team...Appalachian State. Even if Michigan had lost to Hawaii, that loss wouldn't look so bad right about now. And Hawaii would have a little more credibility than it currently enjoys. Another reason to hate Michigan.

You too huh?

I always root for unbeaten teams from BCS conferences, because I just like the underdog. I freely admit I was rooting for them to beat Boise after rooting for Boise to beat the Sooners last year. Sorry Broncos, Hawaii has stolen my heart! Maybe you can get it back next year :-)

That's funny; I've rooted for Boise State for 5 or 6 years, ever since I found out that A) the team is in Idaho, 2) its colors are orange and blue and it plays on a blue turf field, and III) the quarterback was named Dinwiddie and the top receiver was named Gilligan.

Oddly enough I root for Boise State too... I love the blue turf.

I thought Hawaii was also supposed to play UF this year but we pushed it back a year. It was suggested we did this to avoid Colt Brennan, but wouldn't a change like that come more than a year in advance? (Before we knew to be afraid of Brennan)

nolecc, that's good...

Cuz Bobby and the Noles might get a chance to play on that blue turf real soon...
