Week 1 - What we learned

1. South Carolina’s QB play is still horrific. I cannot imagine that there is anything more bothersome to Steve Spurrier than the play of Stephen Garcia.

2. Boise State isn’t going away. I don’t want to discuss the Blount issue, although I do think that the Boise State player is getting off easy.

3. Ohio State can dodge bullets.

4. Ohio State QB, Terrelle Pryor, has an interesting role model.

5. All that talk about Georgia being fine with Stafford and Moreno (someone tell me what did they win again?) was just that, talk. This has the potential of being a very difficult year for Mark Richt.

6. Speaking of difficult years, OU has been hit with three bombshells in the first week of the season. First their All-American TE Gresham hurts a knee and will miss the year, then Sam Bradford gets crushed and ends up hurting a shoulder and they top it all off with a loss. While it isn’t impossible to play for the National Championship with one loss, let me be the first to say thanks for playing OU and we will see you in the Cotton Bowl come January.

7. As my esteemed colleague Mergz so astutely pointed out, the ACC still sucks.

8. Nothing confuses commentators like offense. Last year the media drooled all over the top 4 teams in the Big 12 and the staggering numbers they put up on offense. Of course, come January Ole Miss, Oregon and Florida reminded three of those four that it doesn’t hurt to play a little on the other side of the ball too. Fast forward to this years Miami/FSU game. Throughout the game Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge willed these two teams back into prominence. Other media outlets did the same the next day. While the game was entertaining, there is no way to say either team is back because of it. You cannot judge one team’s progress on the road to recovery when they beat another team that is in complete disarray. Add to that the fact that neither team played a down of defense, and you have two teams that will end the season with at least 4 losses. And still nowhere near relevant when it comes to National Title talk.

9. The Heisman Campaign of Texas QB, Colt McCoy, is very important to Mack Brown. McCoy threw 29 passes against UL-Monroe during the Longhorns' 59-20 win. In contrast, Tim Tebow threw 15 passes in the Gators' 62-3 win.

10. File it under the old adage you only get to make a first impression once - Tennessee played their starters most of the game against Western Kentucky which is the official start of the Lane Kiffin Era. Although they will tell you that they play 10 true freshman during the game, the fact is the big boys played a significant portion of the game against a team that just moved up to the FBS.

Re: #9

Wasn't the majority of the 2007 Florida season focused on Tebow's Heisman (particularly after the LSU loss)?

A couple of comments FWIW:

(1) "Bitche" State is the biggest whiner in college football. Jesus, ifthey actually win a NC, they'll still find something to piss and moan about. As far as last week's game goes, had Oregon not suspended Blount for the entire season in spite of the fact that he was proviked by one of the smurf-turfers talking trash, they would have had their panties in a royal wad. I also agree that the opposing player is getting off easy, but go figure.

(2) So, UcheaT played most of their starters throughout their game against one of the weakest teams in Division 1 college football? They can gloat all they want, but that fact doesn't speak volumes. When it gets down to the nitty-gritty and they're playing UCLA as well as their SEC slate, let's see how they REALLY fare.

I think Tennessee kept them in cause they really need those guys to get the practice against someone other than each other.

Also agree about FSU/UM, I think the defenses were actually not that bad except for the whole unable to make open field tackles.

When do players not talk trash to each other? And has it actually gotten out what the guy said? For all we know he said "good game" in a sarcastic tone and got punched for it.

"Good game in a sarcastic tone"? Sorry, but I'm not buying that. Trash talk is trash talk, no matter how you look at it. That Boise player should have just gone to his locker room when the game was over and let things go instead of sticking the knife in deeper and twisting it. As far as I'm concerned, that idiot got what he deserved when Blount landed him one.

I think even the Cotton Bowl for OU may be optimistic. That team was going to have problems even with Bradford. They could easily lose 5 games.
