Here We Go Again

Trojan lapdog Stewart Mandel takes up the annual “USC is the best team” meme in his latest at SI.com.

And SoCal Pete is back with his lobbying for an AP “national title” with –

"With all due respect to [Oklahoma and Florida]... I don't think anybody can beat us."

Anyone else tired of this same-old-shit year after year?

Yes the Trojans are the first team to win three consecutive Rose Bowls. Let’s see how they got there.

First, play in a conference so uncompetitive that you have won the conference title (or shared it) seven years straight. (In contrast, four SEC teams have won the SEC Championship in the same time period – Auburn, Florida, Georgia and LSU).

Second, don’t have the nuisance of a conference championship game. Get your automatic Rose Bowl bid.

Third, play that Rose Bowl in what is essentially a home game in front of a highly partisan crowd.

Fourth, play an overmatched Big Ten team that has to travel cross country to compete. In 2 of the 3 consecutive wins (Michigan and Illinois), that team is not even the Big Ten winner but the runner-up, as the Big Ten winner (Ohio State) is playing (and getting whipped) in the BCS title game by an SEC team.

Finally, with some hapless Big Ten opponent under foot, put your mug in front of the adoring press and tell everyone that your team is the best.

I am a fan of a playoff for a myriad of reasons, but perhaps none stronger than the opportunity for someone to finally shut Pete Carroll up.

P.S. If your team is always the "best", how come you manage to lose on an annual basis to some tepid Pac Ten foe? With all the heralded talent at USC, how can they lose? Could it be coaching?

With all due respect to Pete Carroll...I think Oregon state already beat them...

Maybe 10 more seasons like this and the PAC10 will give up on the historic-traditional-granddaddy-woah nelly-nostalgia-Rose Bowl and help push for a playoff.

I don't think this is a situation wherein Florida fans need to be complaining, particularly about Mandel, who is easily the best "mainstream" college football writer out there. USC got legitimately punished for their weak schedule this season, and they were left out of the championship in favor of two teams with the same number of losses but better resumes. They got what they deserved and we have nothing to complain about.

P.S. If you want a USC lapdog at Sports Illustrated, look no further than Arash Markazi.

During yesterday's coverage of the Rose Bowl, Brent Musburger gratuitous butt-kissing of Pete Carroll was seriously challenging Mandel as USC's biggest fan. The bias in that broadcast and all the promos was totally ridiculous. Musburger's continuous praising the PAC10's prowess as a strong conference - they won 5 out of 5 bowl games folks... just about made me puke. Never mind that 4 of those were minor bowls. USC would be competitive if they were in the SEC, but IMO they would lose 2 or 3 games a season. They don't have to play against strong defensive teams week after week like SEC teams do.

It doesn't look like Mergz was complaining about the fact that USC didn't get into the MNC game. He's complaining about Pete Carroll's attempts to get AP voters to rank USC #1. If the 'punishment' for a weak schedule is legitimate, as you say, then so is Mergz' complaint.

USC is good, very good. But not close to best...

USC sucks and will not win anything but a Rose Bowl Trophy ... Who wants that?

During Mushmouthburger's knob-slobbering of Pete Carroll and the mighty Condoms, he also talked about the "dynasty" B-B-B-Bobby put together at Free Shoes, and how he thought we'd "never" see anything like what they had done...until USCw's astounding three consecutive Rose Bowl wins.

Note to Brent:
Put the Smirnoff's down for a sec...
and pay attention:

a) if they're playing in the Rose Bowl, it means they're NOT one of the 2 best teams in the country.

and

b) there's ANOTHER team in Florida, who has put together a run that puts BOTH of them to shame; does ANYONE in the media realize that IF the "national championship" existed, the Gators would be playing in their FOURTH championship game in 13 years?
And unlike our Columbus auxillary campus, WE didn't need a ridiculously late (and incorrect) call to actually WIN a couple of them.

P.S. On a related note:

once again...IF the "national championship" existed, Pete Carroll would have won ONE of them...NOT two. So would all of you morons who apparently tell the difference between "one" and "two" either correct your notes...or just STFU.

Thanks!

BINGO. Now just get the Pac-10 and the Big Ten to play ball - and stop being a bunch of pompous jerks about their precious Rose Bowl. They're the ones, IMO, keeping college football from instituting a playoff system.
