BCS Armageddon?

As of this moment Oklahoma is beating Mizzou and a dreadful Pitt team coached by the gimpy Wannstache is beating West Virginia. #1 and #2 go down (as is only fitting in this wild and wacky season) then OSU slides into the BCS title game after waltzing their way through the biggest joke of a schedule possible. And then what? I had a debate with a commenter named Tommy about Georgia, which didn't even win its division, making it into the BCS championship. I told him I didn't think it would happen.

Also we've seen a non-conference-champ play for the BCS championship before and besides getting beat like a redheaded step child there was a pretty significant backlash to the idea of it. That's reality. If Oklahoma beats Mizzou and WVU loses the backyard brawl there will be a big outcry in the media against your Dawgs. Whether you like it or not that's what's going to happen and they are all going to be pointing to that Oklahoma game as a reason why it shouldn't happen...

And here's why Georgia won't get in, in the scenario you described. Georgia is idle. LSU will have beaten Tennessee for the SEC title Game with the entire country watching. LSU has been near the top of the polls allseason and the voters will leapfrog a 2-loss SEC champ LSU over an idle 2-loss Georgia. That's exactly what happened last year with the Gators and Michigan except both teams had 1 loss.
Well looky here. Craig James, Doug Flutie and John Saunders said basically the same thing during halftime of the Mizzou/Oklahoma game. If the scores hold up Georgia will be headed to New Orleans but to play in the Sugar Bowl, not the BCS Championship.

On a completely unrelated note, where are the Cal fans that regularly commented here when they were undefeated and we had the temerity to suggest that the Bears were a fraud? Well, tonight Cal joined USC in sharing the ignominious distinction of being Stanford's bitch.

UPDATE: WVU loses the Backyard Brawl and Lou Holtz also agrees with me that LSU should get in there over Georgia. The drumbeat begins.

UPDATE: Oklahoma takes a 35-17 lead and Armageddon is imminent. Kirk Herbstreit, who I think is a dumbass, agrees with me that LSU should be the team to face OSU in the BCS Championship. What does that say about me? We'll at least I can say that a blind squirrel like Herbie is destined to find a nut every now and then.

UPDATE: Just perusing BCS Guru and he had this to say about Georgia's BCS Championship hopes:
It's a long, long shot. The Dawgs need both Missouri and West Virginia to lose and hope neither Virginia Tech nor LSU jumps them. There will be huge shifts in the polls to prevent UGA from being ranked higher than an SEC-winning LSU.

As long as a Big 12 team (coughSoonerscough) doesn't mysteriously get voted into the title game yet AGAIN. Because right now that would be the only thing worse than what I've seen tonight.

BTW I think it's the Nebraska-Miami title game fiasco you're referring to since the Huskers not only failed to win their division, but got destroyed by Colorado in mid-November and yet somehow got voted in anyway. One year OU did get whomped in the Big 12 title game, but they at least won their division to get there.

dolfan, yes both Nebraska and Oklahoma made it to the title game without being conf. champs. Conf champsbeing the operative word. In Nebraksa's case they weren't even division champs. So you are right. We're both right. I only mentioned OK because it was more recent.

UGA did win its division - in the case of a tie, the teams are co-champs. The tie-break only decides who gets to go to the SECCG. It's the same in basketball, but there the tie-breaks merely decide seeding in the conference tournament. You may recall that last season was the first time UF won the SEC regular season outright in many years, but Donovan had several "co-titles" before that.

I think Vol fans might beg to differ on the whole "co-champs" thing, due to a certain game that had a certain lopsided score.

Remember, a playoff system is BAD because it would cheapen the regular season :-)

And yet somehow I already know VT is going to wind up being ranked ahead of LSU despite the results of another certain blowout game.

Next thing you know a coach of a 2-loss team will claim those losses were really ties. Oh wait...

Welcome to liberal America in which defeats aren't really defeats at all, and in fact never actually happened.

Oh yeah, my reading comprehension sucks tonight, probably due to my brain being overloaded with final scores that go way beyond the mere ludicrously absurd. Not that it's an excuse, since I should be used to that by now every Saturday. Of course you said teams that didn't win their conference, my bad.

Although the Nebraska thing was still more egregious.

Did I mention I hate the Big 12 and all it stands for? Because I do.

Vol fans may say whatever they wish. And after they've had their say, they can be referred to the SEC's official website, which lists Georgia and Tennessee as "Eastern Division Co-Champions" and Tennessee as "Eastern Division SEC Championship Game Representative."

If Kentucky had given us a helping hand and forced a three-way tie, UF would have represented the East despite losing to UGA; and if UGA fans had claimed they were the 'real' champs because of the head-to-head we would have laughed and laughed...

So why can't Vol fans laugh and laugh at your claim, then?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

You want to play for a national title, then don't bend over and let yourself get anally raped by a team with 3 blowout losses next time. Oh, the game was in Knoxville you say? Well gee, playing in Columbus and Morgantown sure didn't help the Buckeyes and Mountaneers too much in their last home games did it?

You can take your "Georgia is co-champ" designation and stuff it in the trash, because that's how much it's worth.

I really don't want Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. I love the Zooker and it'd be amazing to see him in the Rose Bowl, but I'm also selfish, and was really looking forward to the Zook Bowl in Orlando... oh well...

Listen, old chap, if you want to dismiss the official SEC rules as a technicality, you may. You should alert the UF Athletic Department, however - we wouldn't want to claim an illegitimate co-championship from 2003. (I refer you to the 'year in review' section for that season on gatorzone.com, which says that 'Florida won a share of the SEC East division for the eighth time in school history.') Oh, the horror!

Just because the UAA buys into the idea of division co-cjamps with an asterisk doesn't mean we do. That's garbage. There is only one reason to win the division and that's to play for the conference title. Your bulldogs didn't because they didn't.

It's time for you guys to come down from the cloud and realize that the voters aren't going to see it like you see it. While I agree with them in this instance it doesn't take away our fundamental disagreement with this SYSTEM in which opinion counts so much.
