Notre Dame Historical Ineptitude Watch

Notre Dame's offense got healthy on a weak Duke defense and appears to have avoided a date with destiny in terms of setting a mark for offensive futility.

The Irish put up 28 points and 414 yards of offense (194 passing, 220 rushing) on the Blue Devils.

That puts ND's average yards per game at 235.8. At this point the Irish would need to have a net negative 27 yards in their season closer at Stanford to go under the 214-yard average put up by the Rutgers 2002 squad and to have the worst offense in the past 9 years. But alas it's not likely against the Cardinal which give up 455.3 yards per game.

That said, it is very possible that Notre Dame will finish dead last in total offense behind Florida International which currently averages 251.1 yards of total offense.

Incidentally, both FIU and Syracuse trail Notre Dame in scoring offense. Notre Dame averages 16 points per game while FIU and Syracuse average 15.1 and 12 respecively.

Though immortality for offensive ineptness will not be achieved, it sure has been fun rooting for it.
